Contemporary Jewellery Design in Melbourne.  ‘Contemporary jewellery’ expresses the cultural and social attitudes of the current times.

Some consider a ‘contemporary jeweller’ as one who does not use traditional gold and silversmithing techniques.  In contrast, others see the ‘contemporary jeweller’ as one who embraces all modern methods and conventional gold and silversmithing techniques to express an idea. The method does not determine the value of an item of jewellery; it’s the concept and the quality of execution, making it a valuable contribution to the art world.

Contemporary Jewellery Design has gone far beyond adornment and function. The craft has become an art form; it is the ‘Studio jeweller’ the independent artisan who uses their chosen materials to make one-of-a-kind or limited editions pieces of jewellery. The ‘Studio Jeweller’ produces unique and distinctive statement pieces which contribute to the growing appreciation of jewellery as an art form.

If a sculpture is an art, then jewellery is also ‘art’.  We wear it rather than placing it in an open space.  If a ring or pendant were six meters high, it would be considered a sculpture. When I say ring or a pendant I’m not referring to mass-produced commercial jewellery, I’m referring to unique individually designed and handmade crafted objects made by an artisan.

We must not forget the practical aspects of jewellery.  For example, wedding rings that signify marital status, religious items, amulets, devotional medals, and jewellery as a currency. Also, items such as crowns and other objects to indicate status and importance. These are all a great contributor to the world of jewellery, and I love them all.

Around the 13th century, the Old French word “jouel” was anglicized and became the word ‘jewel’.  Hence the term ‘jewellery’ was derived.
