Description
Doublet Opal Ring set in pure gold and sterling silver and all Australian. The Doublet Opal collection is designed and handmade in our Mornington Peninsula Studio in Victoria. The pure gold setting enhances the brilliant blues and greens in the Opal. The designs are understated as the colours in the Opal speak for themselves.
The Doublet Opal Ring is a slice of Opal backed with a hard material for stability. The dark background enhances the colour of the Opal. An Opal doublet is a piece of translucent or semi-translucent Opal glued to a dark backing; the dark support can be ironstone material, potch, or other suitable materials. It is best not to wear the ring in water as all Opals are sensitive to changing temperatures. Remember, any gemstone will crack or chip if it comes into contact with a hard surface. Make sure you have a strong setting, such as a bezel setting—especially for Opals. The boundary of Gold, Platinum or silver surrounding the gemstone acts as a ‘wall,’ keeping the Opal safe and secure.
Opal hardness is 5.0-6.5 on the Mohs Hardness Scale, which means they are relatively soft and rarely faceted. The majority of the world’s precious Opal comes from Australia, where it is the national stone.
